Peru Moves to Declare Border Emergency as Migrants Gather Following Chile Deportation Threat

Peru is preparing to declare a state of emergency along its southern border with Chile as tensions rise over a growing influx of migrants seeking entry into the country. President José Jerí announced the decision on Friday, stating that the move aims to safeguard national security amid concerns of unauthorized crossings.

In a statement posted on X, Jerí said the emergency measure “will generate tranquility before the risk of migrants entering without authorization,” signaling the government’s intention to tighten border control in response to recent developments.

The situation follows a pledge by a leading Chilean presidential frontrunner to expel undocumented migrants, a stance that has triggered increased movement toward neighboring borders.

Peruvian police General Arturo Valverde confirmed to local broadcaster Canal N that more than 100 foreigners — predominantly Venezuelans — are currently gathered near the border, awaiting access into Peru. He added that security personnel have intensified monitoring and surveillance in anticipation of the formal declaration.

The Peruvian government is expected to outline additional enforcement guidelines once the state of emergency takes effect.
