Nigeria TV Info — Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has urged member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to remain committed to defending constitutional governance, deepening political dialogue, and supporting credible transitions that foster long-term regional stability.

Speaking on Wednesday at the opening of the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja, Odumegwu-Ojukwu stressed that the West African bloc must rise to its responsibilities at a critical moment for the region.

The minister, who also called for the acceleration of economic integration across West Africa, challenged ECOWAS leaders to respond decisively to the expectations of millions of young people who, she said, are “looking up to the regional body to create real opportunities and hope.”

She noted that even as ECOWAS continues to celebrate its golden jubilee milestones, the organisation must “confront its challenges headlong” to remain relevant and effective.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu identified the recent surge in military takeovers, continued threats of banditry, and widespread kidnappings as key factors undermining peace, security, and democratic consolidation across member states.

She emphasized that only a united, proactive, and people-centred ECOWAS can address these threats and steer the region toward sustainable development.

The 95th Ordinary Session brings together ministers from all member states to review security, political, and economic developments within the bloc, ahead of the Authority of Heads of State and Government meeting scheduled in Abuja.
