The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into an aviation incident involving a Skypower Express Cessna 172 aircraft that crash-landed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, on Tuesday night.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ASR, was en route from Kaduna International Airport to Port Harcourt International Airport when the flight crew declared an emergency mid-air and diverted to Owerri as a precautionary measure.

The incident occurred at about 8:00pm local time during the aircraft’s approach to Runway 17, according to preliminary information released by the NSIB.

In a statement, the bureau confirmed that four persons were on board the aircraft, adding that no fatalities were recorded. All occupants were said to have survived the incident, though details on injuries, if any, were not immediately disclosed.

The NSIB stated that its investigators have been deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough examination of the aircraft and gather relevant data, including flight records and crew reports, to determine the cause of the crash-landing.

The bureau assured the public that findings from the investigation would be made available in line with international aviation safety standards, reiterating its commitment to improving air safety across Nigeria.

Operations at the Owerri airport were closely monitored following the incident to ensure safety and continuity of services.
