Venezuela Supreme Court Appoints Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as Acting President
Venezuela’s Supreme Court has appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president following the reported detention of President Nicolás Maduro in an early-morning operation allegedly carried out by United States forces.
In a ruling issued on Saturday, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court said Rodríguez would immediately assume presidential responsibilities to ensure continuity of governance and safeguard national stability. The court described the decision as a constitutional necessity aimed at “guaranteeing administrative continuity and the comprehensive defence of the Nation” during President Maduro’s absence.
According to official statements, the court invoked emergency provisions to prevent a leadership vacuum amid rapidly unfolding political developments. Rodríguez, who has served as vice president since 2018 and previously held key ministerial roles, is expected to oversee government affairs until further directives are issued by state institutions.
President Maduro was reportedly detained in the early hours of Saturday, a development that has significantly escalated political tension within Venezuela and sparked widespread international reaction. While details surrounding the operation remain limited, the incident has raised serious questions about sovereignty, international law, and regional stability.
The Venezuelan government has yet to release a full account of Maduro’s status, as diplomatic engagements and security consultations continue. Regional allies and international bodies are closely monitoring the situation, with calls emerging for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
