Obasanjo, Jonathan, Atiku Eulogise Tambuwal at 60 as He Warns Nigeria Is in Peril
Abuja — Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday paid glowing tributes to former Sokoto State Governor and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, as he marked his 60th birthday.
The elder statesmen spoke at a high-level colloquium held in Abuja to commemorate the milestone, describing Tambuwal as a courageous, principled and resilient leader whose political journey has left a significant imprint on Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
In his remarks, Tambuwal warned that Nigeria is currently in peril, stressing that the nation urgently needs collective salvation. He called on Nigerians across political, ethnic and religious divides to unite and rescue the country from its mounting political, economic and security challenges.
“Nigeria is at a critical crossroads. What we need now is unity, patriotism and courage to confront the challenges before us,” Tambuwal said.
Speakers at the event recounted Tambuwal’s historic emergence as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2011, noting how he defied entrenched political interests and the so-called “powers that be” to clinch the position. The moment was described as a defining episode that underscored his independence, political dexterity and commitment to democratic principles.
Former President Obasanjo praised Tambuwal’s legislative leadership and consistency in public service, while Jonathan highlighted his role in strengthening parliamentary independence. Atiku Abubakar, on his part, described Tambuwal as a leader who has repeatedly demonstrated courage in the face of political adversity.
The colloquium drew prominent politicians, lawmakers, academics and civil society leaders, who reflected on Tambuwal’s contributions to governance, democracy and national discourse over the decades.
As celebrations continue, the event doubled as a platform for sober reflection on Nigeria’s future, with speakers echoing Tambuwal’s call for urgent reforms and national renewal.
