PDP No Longer Nigeria’s Dominant Opposition, Fayose Says; Tips Peter Obi as Key Figure Ahead of 2027
Ado-Ekiti — Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer Nigeria’s dominant opposition party, blaming the party’s declining influence on deep-rooted internal divisions and persistent leadership crises.
Fayose made the assertion during an interview with ARISE News senior anchor, Dr Reuben Abati, where he spoke extensively on the current state of opposition politics in Nigeria and the shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Fayose, the PDP has failed to effectively position itself as a strong alternative to the ruling party due to unresolved internal conflicts, lack of unity, and poor strategic direction. He noted that these challenges have weakened the party’s ability to mobilize Nigerians and present a cohesive opposition front.
The former governor also highlighted the growing influence of other political platforms, particularly the Labour Party, which gained significant national attention during the 2023 elections.
Fayose described Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the last election, as a major political force to watch as the country moves toward 2027. He acknowledged Obi’s wide grassroots appeal, especially among youths and urban voters, noting that his political relevance has continued beyond the last election cycle.
While stressing that opposition politics in Nigeria remains fluid, Fayose warned that parties failing to address internal divisions risk further decline, adding that Nigerian voters are becoming more politically conscious and open to alternatives.
His comments have since sparked renewed debate about the future of the PDP and the evolving dynamics of opposition politics in Nigeria ahead of the next general elections.
