EU Leaders Hold Emergency Talks as Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland
Brussels — European Union (EU) leaders convened emergency crisis talks on Sunday after US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 10 percent tariff on imports from several EU countries, including Denmark, France, and Germany, unless they agreed to Washington’s push to buy Greenland.
Major EU states condemned Trump’s tariff threats as an attempt at blackmail. France, in particular, suggested responding with a range of previously untested economic countermeasures against the United States.
Trump had vowed on Saturday to escalate tariffs on EU members Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, as well as the United Kingdom and Norway, until the US is permitted to acquire Greenland.
Cyprus, currently holding the rotating six-month EU presidency, summoned ambassadors to an emergency meeting in Brussels at 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday as EU leaders intensified diplomatic contacts to address the escalating crisis.
