FCTA Orders Immediate Work Resumption as Industrial Court Halts Abuja Workers’ Strike
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed all striking workers in Abuja to return to duty immediately following an order of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria halting the ongoing industrial action.
In a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the FCT, staff across ministries, departments and agencies were instructed to comply fully with the court ruling and resume normal duties with immediate effect. The directive also mandated heads of departments to open attendance registers to monitor compliance and ensure full restoration of government services.
The industrial court, sitting in Abuja, ruled that the strike should be suspended pending the determination of the dispute between the workers’ unions and the FCTA. The court emphasized that once a matter is before it, parties must maintain industrial peace and allow the judicial process to run its course.
FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, warned that any worker who disobeys the court order risks facing disciplinary measures. He stressed that the rule of law must be respected and that government would not tolerate actions capable of disrupting public service delivery in the nation’s capital.
The strike, declared by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), had disrupted activities across several government offices, affecting public services and administrative operations in Abuja. Union leaders had cited unresolved welfare issues and demands for improved working conditions as reasons for the action.
With the court intervention and the FCTA’s directive, government officials expressed optimism that full operations would resume across the FCT while negotiations and legal proceedings continue.
