Trump Expected to Name New Federal Reserve Chair After Meeting With Kevin Warsh
Washington, D.C. — Former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce his choice for the next Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve on Friday, following a White House meeting with former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, a long-time critic of the central bank.
Trump disclosed the impending announcement while speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Kennedy Center, saying the nominee would be “somebody that could have been there a few years ago” and expressing confidence that it would be a “very good choice.”
Kevin Warsh, 55, reportedly met with Trump at the White House on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the meeting. Warsh has previously called for what he described as a “regime change” at the Federal Reserve, arguing that the institution needs major reforms to restore its credibility.
During Trump’s first term in office, Warsh was considered for the Fed chair position but was ultimately passed over in favor of Jerome Powell. Trump later became openly critical of Powell, accusing him of failing to cut interest rates aggressively enough to support economic growth.
This time around, Trump has made clear that support for lower interest rates is a key qualification for the role. Warsh, along with three other finalists reportedly under consideration, has publicly advocated for more aggressive interest rate cuts.
The announcement is expected to draw significant attention from global financial markets, given the Federal Reserve’s influence on the U.S. and global economy.
