Annulled PDP Convention Sparks Turmoil: Turaki Fumes, Wike’s Camp Rejoices
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faced a major internal crisis as its planned national convention was abruptly annulled. Former Defence Minister Dalhatu Sarki-Turaki condemned the cancellation, calling it a “blow to party democracy” and threatening legal action. Turaki warned that the annulment could deepen divisions, weaken the party, and jeopardize preparations for future elections.
Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike’s faction welcomed the move, describing it as a win for internal party democracy. Wike’s supporters argue that the annulment prevents entrenched elites from dominating party structures, paving the way for fairer representation. Analysts warn, however, that prolonged factional disputes may harm the PDP’s unity and electoral strength.
Both camps are now strategizing: Turaki’s supporters plan legal challenges, while Wike’s camp pushes for reforms to strengthen internal democracy. Observers believe the standoff will shape PDP’s political landscape and influence upcoming national elections, highlighting persistent tensions between party reformists and establishment figures.
