US Military Deploys Team To Nigeria Amid Expanded Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
The United States military has confirmed that a team of American forces has been dispatched to Nigeria as part of deepening security cooperation between Washington and Abuja aimed at combating terrorism and related threats in the country.
According to reports, the development was disclosed on Tuesday by General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). He stated that both nations agreed on the need for closer military collaboration to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
The deployment follows earlier remarks by US President Donald Trump, who in December said he had ordered airstrikes on what he described as Islamic State targets in Nigeria, adding that further American military actions could be considered.
General Anderson did not reveal the exact number of personnel involved or the specific operational details of the mission. However, he described the unit as a small contingent equipped with “unique capabilities” contributed by the United States to support joint efforts.
“That has led to increased collaboration between our nations to include a small US team that brings some unique capabilities from the United States,” Anderson said.
Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, also confirmed the presence of a US team operating in the country, though he declined to provide additional details about their role or scope of activities.
Reports further indicate that the United States had been conducting surveillance flights over the region from Ghana since at least late November, highlighting growing intelligence and security coordination between the two countries.
The latest move signals a significant step in US-Nigeria defence relations as both governments seek to counter insurgent and extremist groups operating in parts of the region.
