Russian Envoy Denies Recruitment of Nigerians for Ukraine War
The Russian government has denied allegations that it is recruiting Nigerian citizens to fight in the ongoing war in Ukraine, describing the claims as false and misleading.
Speaking through official diplomatic channels, Russia’s envoy dismissed reports circulating on social media and some international platforms suggesting that Nigerians were being enlisted to join Russian military operations. The envoy stressed that Russia does not conduct military recruitment activities in Nigeria and respects the country’s sovereignty and laws.
The clarification comes amid growing global scrutiny over the involvement of foreign nationals in the Russia–Ukraine conflict. Since the war began, several countries have raised concerns about private military groups and informal recruitment networks allegedly operating across different regions.
Nigerian authorities have not announced any confirmed cases of state-backed recruitment of its citizens by Russia. However, security experts continue to warn young Africans to be cautious of online offers promising jobs or travel opportunities abroad that could be linked to conflict zones.
Diplomatic observers say the denial may be aimed at easing tensions and preventing misinformation from affecting bilateral relations between Nigeria and Russia, which maintain ties in areas such as energy, education, and trade.
The Ukraine war, now stretching into another year, has drawn international attention not only for battlefield developments but also for the broader humanitarian and geopolitical impact across Europe, Africa, and beyond.
