Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks in Geneva Collapse After Two Hours
Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Geneva ended abruptly on Wednesday after roughly two hours, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accusing Moscow of deliberately stalling negotiations aimed at ending the four-year war.
The United States-mediated discussions in Switzerland concluded without a breakthrough, minutes after Zelenskyy described the talks as “difficult” and alleged that Russia was attempting to delay progress toward what he called a potential final stage of negotiations.
“Russia is trying to drag out negotiations that could already have reached the final stage,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, following reports that the first day of meetings had been tense.
Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti later reported that the talks had ended. Moscow’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, told reporters that further negotiations would take place soon, though he did not specify a date.
A Ukrainian official confirmed the talks lasted around two hours.
The meeting comes amid increasing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who in recent days publicly urged Kyiv to move quickly toward a peace agreement. Trump told reporters earlier this week that “Ukraine better come to the table fast.”
Diplomatic observers say the abrupt end underscores the deep divisions that continue to hinder efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to the conflict.
