Petrol, Diesel Vessels Arrive Nigeria Amid Price Surge

Amid a sharp rise in fuel costs across the country, vessels laden with 129,000 metric tonnes of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) are scheduled to dock at Nigeria’s ports — particularly in Lagos — between March 14 and March 17, 2026, as the nation grapples with surging pump prices.

The arrival of these shipments comes at a time when Nigerians are facing record‑high petrol prices, with retail figures now commonly exceeding ₩1,200 per litre in many areas, and in some cases climbing toward ₩1,300 per litre. Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s recent increase in its gantry price for PMS to around ₩1,175 has been a key driver of the upward trend.

Officials from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have explained that, despite their earlier public statement that no new petrol import licences were issued this year, importers have continued bringing in fuel to boost supply. This situation underscores ongoing tensions between local refining capacities and actual market dynamics.

Independent marketers have indicated readiness to lift imported products to ensure availability and competition, signalling efforts to ease shortages. However, projections suggest that prices could continue to climb if global supply concerns — particularly in the Middle East — persist.

The fuel price surge has broader economic implications, pushing up transport costs and contributing to rising prices of goods and services nationwide. With dependence on imported refined products continuing despite the presence of local refineries, Nigeria’s fuel market remains highly sensitive to international logistics, pricing, and regulatory developments.
