Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday challenged a suit seeking to stop him from contesting the 2027 presidential election, telling a Federal High Court in Abuja that the matter had already been decided by competent courts.
Jonathan, through his lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, raised the objection before Justice Peter Lifu shortly after the matter was called for hearing in Abuja.
According to the former president’s legal team, Jonathan had already filed a conditional appearance, preliminary objection, counter-affidavit, and written address on May 5, urging the court to dismiss the suit entirely.
Chief Uche argued that the plaintiff was attempting to reopen issues that had previously been resolved by the judiciary, insisting that the current action lacked merit and should not proceed.
The suit is seeking to prevent Jonathan from participating in the 2027 presidential election over constitutional interpretations surrounding presidential tenure and eligibility.
Jonathan’s legal representatives maintained that the courts had earlier addressed similar questions regarding his eligibility, stressing that revisiting the matter amounted to an abuse of court process.
Justice Peter Lifu listened to submissions from parties in the matter and is expected to determine the next line of action after reviewing the filed processes.
The development has already generated political reactions across Nigeria as discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to gain momentum.
Political observers believe the case could shape early debates ahead of the next general election, especially amid ongoing speculation about whether Jonathan may return to active presidential politics.
Further proceedings in the case are expected in the coming days at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
