The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) has said the Nigerian Navy served as the logistics and combat backbone of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) operations during the civil conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Speaking on the Navy’s historical contribution to regional peacekeeping, the CNS stated that the Nigerian Navy played a critical role in transporting troops, military equipment, and supplies while also providing combat support to peacekeeping forces deployed in both countries.

He noted that the Navy’s operations were essential in sustaining military missions aimed at restoring peace and stability during periods of armed conflict in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

According to the naval chief, Nigeria’s contribution through ECOMOG demonstrated the country’s commitment to regional peace, security, and humanitarian intervention in West Africa.

The ECOMOG intervention, led largely by Nigeria, was widely recognized for helping to stabilize both nations following years of violent conflict and political instability.

The CNS also commended officers and personnel who participated in the operations, acknowledging their sacrifices and dedication to peacekeeping efforts under difficult and dangerous conditions.

Nigeria remains a key player in regional and continental security operations, with the Nigerian Navy continuing to strengthen maritime security and defence cooperation across Africa.
