World football governing body FIFA has reportedly approved Iran’s request to relocate its 2026 World Cup training base from the United States to Mexico, according to Iran Football Federation President, Mehdi Taj.
Iran had initially planned to establish its training camp in Tucson, Arizona, but the federation confirmed that the team will now be based in Tijuana, Mexico, following discussions with FIFA officials. According to Mehdi Taj, the request was approved after meetings and consultations with FIFA leadership.
The move is expected to provide Iran with easier access to its group-stage venues in the United States, particularly Los Angeles and Seattle, where the national team is scheduled to play its opening matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials reportedly believe that relocating to Mexico will reduce travel complications and ease visa-related concerns.
Despite the change in training location, Iran will still play its scheduled World Cup matches in the United States as originally planned. FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, has repeatedly maintained that Iran remains part of the tournament and will participate fully in the competition.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is expected to be the largest edition in football history, featuring 48 teams from around the world. Iran’s relocation decision is seen as part of broader efforts to ensure smooth participation amid ongoing geopolitical concerns.
