NSCDC Uncovers Alleged Multi-Billion Naira Railway Theft Ring, Seals Chinese-Linked Steel Companies Nationwide
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reportedly uncovered an alleged multi-billion naira railway theft syndicate involving the illegal diversion and sale of railway materials across Nigeria. Authorities say the operation led to the sealing of several Chinese-linked steel companies in different parts of the country over suspected involvement in the illegal trade.
According to the NSCDC, the crackdown followed months of intelligence gathering and investigations into the disappearance of critical railway infrastructure, including steel components believed to have been removed from active and inactive rail lines. Officials allege that stolen railway materials were being processed and sold through certain steel manufacturing companies.
The agency disclosed that multiple facilities linked to foreign operators, including Chinese-affiliated firms, were sealed as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the network and prevent further economic sabotage. Security operatives reportedly recovered large quantities of suspected railway items during coordinated enforcement operations.
NSCDC officials described the alleged theft as a major threat to Nigeria’s transport infrastructure, warning that vandalism and illegal sale of railway materials could undermine national development and public safety. The agency also vowed to prosecute anyone found culpable, regardless of nationality or business status.
Authorities emphasized that investigations are still ongoing, and additional arrests or company sanctions may follow as more evidence emerges.
The Federal Government has repeatedly warned against the destruction and theft of public infrastructure, particularly railway assets, which are considered essential for economic growth, transportation, and national connectivity.
