Russia Strikes Kill 9, Set Historic Kyiv Monastery Ablaze
Kyiv, Ukraine â Nigeria TV Info
At least nine people have been killed following a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight bombardment struck several cities, including the capital, Kyiv, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure and cultural landmarks.
One of the most notable incidents was a fire that engulfed the Dormition Cathedral within the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Ukraineâs most important religious and cultural landmarks. The monastery, founded in 1051, has long been regarded as a symbol of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Ukrainian heritage.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, describing it as a serious assault on Christian culture and national heritage. Emergency crews battled flames at the site while residents across Kyiv sought shelter amid explosions and air raid warnings.
Russia denied responsibility for the damage to the monastery, claiming that a U.S.-made Patriot air-defense missile caused the fire. Ukrainian authorities and several Western officials, however, blamed the destruction on the Russian assault.
The attack also damaged residential buildings, markets, and other public facilities, while thousands of households reportedly experienced power disruptions. The latest strike highlights the continuing human and cultural toll of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
