Motorists Stranded as Flood Overruns Lagos Communities

Lagos, Nigeria – September 25, 2025 – Heavy rainfall on Wednesday brought parts of Lagos to a standstill, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting daily life across several communities. The downpour led to flash floods that submerged roads, businesses, and homes, causing significant inconvenience for residents and commuters.

Severe Flooding Across the City

The torrential rain resulted in widespread flooding, particularly affecting areas such as Ikorodu Road, Iyano Oworo, Gbagada, Ogudu, and Third Mainland Bridge. Motorists and pedestrians were trapped in gridlocks, with vehicles unable to move due to the rising water levels. In some locations, floodwaters reached the halfway point of buildings, damaging properties and causing significant losses. For instance, a church in the affected area reported that its musical instruments were damaged, leading to costly repairs or replacements.

Government Response and Apology

The Lagos State Government has expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the flooding. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, attributed the flooding to a combination of heavy rainfall and human activities. He highlighted that illegal construction on floodplains and the dumping of refuse into drains exacerbated the situation. The government has pledged to address these issues through improved drainage infrastructure and enforcement of environmental laws.

Ongoing Challenges in Vulnerable Areas

Despite efforts to mitigate flooding, certain areas remain highly susceptible. Communities in Amuwo-Odofin, for example, continue to face flooding due to blocked drainages and low-lying terrains. Residents have been advised to exercise caution during rainfall and to report any obstructions in drainage systems to local authorities.

As the rainy season persists, authorities urge residents to cooperate by keeping the environment clean, avoiding construction on floodplains, and refraining from dumping refuse into drains.
