Nigeria TV Info â Spiralling Violence in Haiti Forces 680,000 Children from Homes as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Port-au-Prince â Spiralling violence and gang domination in Haiti have forced 680,000 children from their homes â nearly double the number recorded a year ago â as the countryâs humanitarian crisis deepens, the United Nations Childrenâs Fund (UNICEF) said on Wednesday.
UNICEF warns that over six million Haitians â more than half the population, including 3.3 million children â now require urgent humanitarian assistance amid collapsing public services. Schools, hospitals, and water supply systems have all been disrupted by the worsening insecurity.
âChildren in Haiti are experiencing violence and displacement at a terrifying scale,â said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. âEach time they are forced to flee, they lose not only their homes but also their chance to go to school, and simply to be children.â
The humanitarian outlook is dire:
Over 1 million children face critical food insecurity.
Approximately 288,500 children under five are expected to suffer acute malnutrition in 2025.
About 2.7 million people now live in areas controlled by armed groups.
Internal displacement has risen to 246,000 people this year alone, bringing the total number uprooted to over 1.3 million â mostly women and children.
Haitiâs growing instability is driven by armed gangs expanding control over major towns and transport routes, leaving local police powerless and basic services in ruins. Humanitarian agencies have also reduced operations due to safety concerns.
Last month, the UN Security Council approved a US-backed plan to strengthen an international mission supporting Haitian authorities. However, more than 15 months after its launch, the mission still lacks sufficient funding, personnel, and equipment to tackle the crisis effectively.
This deepening humanitarian disaster poses urgent questions about Haitiâs future stability and the international communityâs capacity to respond.
