Nigeria TV Info — LP Secretary Says Peter Obi Won’t Contest in 2027, Claims He Rejected Party’s Presidential Ticket
Abuja, Nigeria — Less than 24 hours after former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, reaffirmed his membership of the Labour Party (LP) and declared that his name would appear on the ballot in 2027, the National Secretary of the LP faction loyal to Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, has said that Obi will not be contesting in the next presidential election.
In an interview with Trust TV on Thursday, Ibrahim stated that Obi was merely enjoying the media spotlight and had distanced himself from the party. According to him, despite Obi’s recent public assertions, he has shown no genuine interest in the 2027 presidential race.
“I can tell you, Obi is not going to contest presidential election. Obi is enjoying media publicity but 2027, he is not interested in it. We have offered him presidential ticket, he rejected it,” Farouk said.
He further argued that opposition parties in the country have become too “demoralised” to pose a real challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), asserting that President Bola Tinubu appears “comfortable” ahead of the next election cycle.
“When you look at those people contesting with Tinubu, in any match you see the opponents. Are these really opponents? Except the referee wants to be giving them penalties, even with the penalties, there are people who will score and there are those who will miss the penalties,” Ibrahim remarked.
The LP Secretary dismissed claims that the APC was responsible for the crisis within opposition parties, insisting that the Labour Party had no basis to accuse the ruling party of interference.
“I say it here that for us in Labour Party, we do not have any reason for anyone to accuse APC of interfering in our internal crisis,” he said.
Farouk also questioned Peter Obi’s current political direction, suggesting that his recent actions had created uncertainty regarding his true allegiance.
As political activities begin to build toward the 2027 general elections, the statements from both Obi and the Abure-led Labour Party faction highlight the growing rift and confusion within opposition ranks.
