Nigeria TV Info – UN Officials Hail Nigeria’s Leadership on Internal Displacement, Sign $200 Million Livelihood Support Fund Agreement

Abuja, Nigeria – Senior United Nations (UN) officials have commended Nigeria for its remarkable leadership and commitment to addressing internal displacement challenges, urging sustained international support to ensure the full realization of long-term, development-driven solutions.

This commendation came as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture Limited (BOA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving access to sustainable livelihoods for migrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the country.

The agreement, signed by IOM’s Deputy Director-General for Operations, Ugochi Daniels, and Managing Director/CEO of the Bank of Agriculture, Ayo Sotinrin, establishes a $200 million Agriculture and Livelihood Support Fund designed to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of forcibly displaced Nigerians.

At the conclusion of a three-day joint mission to Nigeria, a high-level UN delegation — comprising Daniels; Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at UNHCR, Raouf Mazou; and Director of the Crisis Bureau at UNDP, Shoko Noda — urged both international and national stakeholders to consolidate Nigeria’s progress through coordinated, inclusive, and sustainable interventions.

The officials highlighted that Nigeria’s forthcoming National Development Plan (2026–2030) presents a unique opportunity to integrate durable solutions for IDPs into national development strategies and financing priorities.

They also called on international financial institutions and development partners to expand sustainable funding mechanisms, stressing that long-term investments are crucial to transitioning from humanitarian aid to self-reliance, economic recovery, and resilience.

During their visit to Yobe State, the delegation met with members of the State Policy Advisory Committee on Durable Solutions, including the deputy governor, traditional leaders, commissioners, and representatives of displaced persons.

State authorities disclosed that 24 per cent of Yobe’s annual budget has been allocated to implementing the State Action Plan on Durable Solutions, marking one of the most significant government commitments to displacement issues globally.

The UN delegation commended Nigeria’s multi-sectoral approach and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the country’s ongoing efforts to promote stability, livelihood recovery, and inclusive national development.
