CPC: US congressman meets Tiv, Catholic leaders, pledges support

Strong support from US for Tiv & Christian leaders

Riley Moore — a member of the United States House of Representatives — met with Tiv people traditional and Christian (Catholic) leaders in Benue State, including Wilfred Chikpa Anagbe and Isaac Dugu, along with the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv.

In a post on X, Moore described the situation in Benue as an “ongoing genocidal campaign” by Fulani militias, pledging that the US “will not ignore the suffering.”

Calls for concrete action: US–Nigeria cooperation

Moore emphasised that the US and Nigerian officials — including the national security adviser — are exploring “concrete steps” to improve security.

He lauded the establishment of a “joint task force” between the US and Nigeria as a key step toward tackling violence and protecting Christian communities.

Ongoing Christian persecution and security crisis in Middle Belt

The meeting comes amid repeated attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, often blamed on armed Fulani militias. Local bishops and leaders have long accused the government of downplaying the scale of violence.

During the engagement, church leaders provided witnesses’ testimonies, casualty figures and evidence of attacks on Christian communities — directly challenging state narratives.

Reaction and Next Steps

Moore said the US has “heard your cries” and is committed to working toward solutions, but added that “openness
 must translate to concrete action.”

He also welcomed recent efforts by the Nigerian government, such as the rescue of abducted Catholic schoolchildren — calling it a “positive demonstration” of commitment by authorities.
