Benin City Wins $1m Prize in Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge

Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has gained global recognition after emerging among the top cities in the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, winning a $1 million innovation prize for its groundbreaking approach to improving public services.

The international competition, organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies, attracted more than 600 cities worldwide, with only 25 cities across 20 countries reaching the final stage. Benin City was also one of only four African cities that made the shortlist, placing it among the leading global cities recognized for innovative governance and urban solutions.

The award recognises cities that present bold and practical solutions to urban challenges, particularly those that improve the lives of residents. Benin City’s winning initiative focuses largely on strengthening healthcare delivery systems, using innovative strategies to improve access and efficiency in the state’s public health sector.

Reacting to the achievement, the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, described the award as a reflection of the government’s commitment to innovation and improved healthcare services for residents. According to him, the recognition shows that ideas developed in Benin City can compete successfully on the global stage.

The governor congratulated the Edo State Ministry of Health and the team behind the project, noting that the milestone reinforces Edo State’s growing reputation as a hub for forward-thinking governance and impactful public sector reforms. He also commended residents for their continued support for government policies aimed at improving welfare and service delivery.

Experts say the Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is one of the world’s most competitive platforms for cities to propose innovative solutions to urban problems. Winning cities receive funding and technical support to implement their ideas and scale them to benefit more people.

The $1 million prize is expected to further boost healthcare innovation and urban development efforts in Benin City, while strengthening its position as a rising center for innovation in Africa.
