North Korea ‘Respects’ Iran’s Selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader
North Korea has announced that it respects Iran’s decision to appoint Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader, expressing support for Tehran’s political process while condemning recent military actions against the Islamic Republic.
In a statement released through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), a spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Pyongyang respects “the rights and choice of the Iranian people to elect their supreme leader.” The remarks came after Iran’s Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The appointment follows a turbulent period in Iran after the death of Ali Khamenei during escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel. Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric and the late leader’s son, was chosen to lead the Islamic Republic amid ongoing regional tensions and internal security challenges.
North Korea’s foreign ministry also used the opportunity to criticize Washington and Tel Aviv, accusing them of destabilizing the region through what it described as “illegal military attacks” on Iran. According to the statement, such actions threaten global peace and violate Iran’s political system and territorial integrity.
The reaction highlights the longstanding relationship between North Korea and Iran, two countries that have often aligned politically and faced international sanctions over their military and nuclear programs. Analysts say Pyongyang’s endorsement signals continued diplomatic solidarity with Tehran during a period of heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East.
Observers note that Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership could shape Iran’s future domestic and foreign policies, particularly as the country navigates war pressures, international scrutiny, and internal political divisions.
