Oluremi Tinubu Demands Urgent Action Against Child Marriage to End Obstetric Fistula

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for urgent and coordinated national action to end child marriage, describing it as a major driver of obstetric fistula and maternal health complications among young girls.

Speaking at a health advocacy event focused on maternal wellbeing, she emphasized that early marriage exposes girls to high-risk pregnancies, often resulting in prolonged obstructed labour, childbirth injuries, and lifelong physical and emotional trauma.

She urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns and enforcement of laws protecting the girl child. According to her, ending child marriage is critical to achieving Nigeria’s maternal health and gender equality goals.

The First Lady also called for improved access to reproductive healthcare services, especially in rural communities, and stronger support systems for women already suffering from obstetric fistula, including free treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration programmes.

Health experts at the event reiterated that obstetric fistula remains a preventable condition largely driven by poverty, lack of education, and early marriage practices. They stressed that sustained advocacy and government intervention are key to eliminating it.
