NFF Slams Dessers, Troost-Ekong After Super Eagles’ Draw With South Africa
BLOEMFONTEIN — The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has criticized striker Cyriel Dessers and faulted captain William Troost-Ekong following the Super Eagles’ frustrating 1-1 draw against South Africa in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash on Tuesday.
Nigeria, desperate for maximum points to keep their qualification hopes on track, endured a difficult start as defender Ola Aina limped off injured in the eighth minute. The situation worsened in the 25th minute when Troost-Ekong inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing Bafana Bafana the lead.
Fulham’s Calvin Bassey restored parity for the Super Eagles just before halftime with a towering header. Despite dominating possession in the second half, Nigeria failed to convert chances, with substitutes Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze, and Chrisantus Uche all struggling to make an impact.
The NFF expressed disappointment with Dessers’ lack of sharpness in front of goal and Troost-Ekong’s costly error, insisting that Nigeria must step up performances in their remaining qualifiers to stand a realistic chance of reaching the 2026 World Cup.
