Rohr Says Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes Dim After Draw With South Africa

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has expressed doubts over Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein. The result came as Benin’s Cheetahs thrashed Lesotho 4-0, intensifying Nigeria’s uphill battle in Group C.

After Matchday 7 and 8, South Africa remained top of Group C with 17 points, followed by Benin with 14 points, while Nigeria sits in third place with just 11 points.

“We are happy about this great victory (over Lesotho) and we are eagerly awaiting FIFA’s decision to take three points away from South Africa and give it to Lesotho because that is the rule,” Rohr told NationSport, even as he lamented Nigeria’s draw against the Bafana Bafana.

The former Super Eagles manager’s comments underscore the mounting pressure on Nigeria as they look to salvage their World Cup qualification campaign.
