Eagles Can Win 2025 AFCON – Nwabali
Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has expressed confidence that Nigeria can clinch the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco. Speaking on SuperSport TV, Nwabali said the team has learned vital lessons from their 2023 AFCON campaign, where they finished as runners-up after a 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast.
He noted that the Super Eagles, being a “big football nation,” are not just expected to compete but to bring the trophy home. “Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it,” the Chippa United goalkeeper said.
Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under late coach Stephen Keshi, with previous triumphs in 1980 and 1994. Nwabali, whose performances in Ivory Coast earned him the first-choice goalkeeper role, has recently faced criticism for time-wasting antics and on-field errors during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ahead of the AFCON, Nigeria must first navigate the African World Cup playoffs for a place in the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by USA, Canada, and Mexico. Nwabali may face competition from Udinese’s Maduka Okoye, who returns to the national team setup.
