Osimhen Double Fires Nigeria Past Gabon 4–1 in Extra-Time Thriller

Rabat, Morocco – The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a dramatic 4–1 victory over Gabon after extra time on Thursday, with Victor Osimhen delivering a standout performance by scoring twice to propel his side into the next round.

Nigeria started brightly, dominating possession and creating several early chances through Ademola Lookman and Bright Osayi-Samuel. The pressure nearly paid off when Osimhen went close in the 23rd minute, narrowly missing from close range.

The first half, however, ended goalless despite Nigeria’s attacking intent, as VAR cleared a handball appeal against a Gabon defender and the Super Eagles’ defence—anchored by Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi—held firm against late counterattacks led by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Openda.

Gabon came out stronger after the break, almost taking the lead following a lengthy VAR check for a possible penalty, but the referee opted to give only a corner. Nigeria’s response was swift, with coach Finidi George introducing Moses Simon and Chidera Ejuke, whose pace and creativity injected new life into the attack.

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Osimhen converted from close range after a brilliant cross from Simon. Gabon equalised moments later through Aubameyang, forcing the match into extra time.

In the extra period, Nigeria’s fitness and tactical discipline made the difference. Osimhen restored the lead with a well-taken finish in the 98th minute before Ejuke and Alex Iwobi sealed the win with late strikes to complete the 4–1 rout.

With the victory, Nigeria continues its strong campaign and sends a clear message to rivals across Africa.
