New Rule Announced by FIFA for the 2026 World Cup

FIFA mandates 3‑minute hydration breaks every half at the 2026 World Cup — for every match, irrespective of weather, stadium, or location.

 What the Rule Says

  • Every game will be paused at roughly the 22nd minute of each half.
  • The break lasts exactly three minutes — from whistle to whistle.
  • This applies to all 104 matches of the tournament, regardless of heat, humidity, or whether the stadium is air-conditioned or not.
  • Exception: if there’s already a stoppage (e.g. injury) around the 20th–21st minute, referees may adjust the timing.

Why It’s Being Done — and What It Means

  • The new rule replaces discretionary "cooling breaks" that were only used when heat thresholds were reached — now it's universal, even in cool or indoor venues.
  • The aim is to prioritize player welfare: rehydration, rest, and heat mitigation, especially with high humidity or heat even in “normal” conditions.
  • The breaks effectively turn each 45‑minute half into two quarters — potentially changing match flow, tactics, substitution timing and even broadcast scheduling (ads during breaks) thanks to predictable pauses.
  • This marks the first time such a standardized, unconditional hydration break is enforced at a World Cup.

Quote from FIFA

“For every game, no matter where the games are played, no matter if there’s a roof, [or] temperature-wise, there will be a three‑minute hydration break.” — Manolo Zubiria, Chief Tournament Officer for World Cup 2026.
