Egypt Edge Super Eagles 2–1 in Pre-AFCON Friendly in Cairo
The Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday defeated Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2–1 in an international friendly match played at the Cairo International Stadium, as both teams wrapped up preparations ahead of the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals set to begin in Morocco on Sunday.
Nigeria began the encounter with an unusual 3-5-2 formation, deployed for the first time under head coach Eric Chelle. The tactical switch appeared effective early on, as the Super Eagles maintained good balance and dominated possession during the opening 15 minutes of the match.
However, the hosts gradually grew into the game, relying on swift counterattacks to unsettle the Nigerian defence. Egypt’s approach paid off midway through the first half when they capitalised on one of their attacking moves to take the lead.
Despite the setback, the Super Eagles continued to test the Pharaohs with controlled build-up play and midfield dominance, using the match to fine-tune tactics and assess player combinations ahead of the continental showpiece.
The friendly served as a valuable test for both sides, offering insights into squad readiness, tactical flexibility, and areas needing improvement before AFCON action gets underway.
Nigeria and Egypt are among the tournament favourites and will be aiming to build on the lessons from the Cairo encounter as they turn their focus to competitive football in Morocco.
