Lionel Messi marked his return from injury with a late goal to inspire Inter Miami to a 3–1 victory over reigning MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.

The 38-year-old Argentine superstar came off the bench in the second half and made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net in the 84th minute to seal the win for Miami.

Messi had been sidelined since August 2 after picking up what head coach Javier Mascherano described as a “minor muscle injury” – believed to be a hamstring strain – during Inter’s Leagues Cup victory over Mexican outfit Necaxa.

Inter Miami took the lead early in the match through Luis Suárez, before Riqui Puig equalised for Galaxy midway through the second half. Messi’s introduction shifted momentum in Miami’s favour, with the former Barcelona forward combining well with teammates before firing home the decisive goal.

Suárez added his second of the evening in stoppage time to ensure the result and give Inter Miami an important win over the defending champions.

Messi’s return will be a major boost for Miami as they continue their push for the MLS playoffs.
