Benin Chief Drags MOWAA Promoters to Court Over Proposed Museum

Benin City, Nigeria – A senior member of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin Kingdom, has filed a lawsuit against the promoters of the controversial Museum of West African Contemporary Culture and Arts (MOWAA) over plans to establish a new museum in Benin City.

In the suit marked FHC/B/CS/107/2025, Chief Idah is asking the Federal High Court to restrain MOWAA and its agents from establishing, opening, or operating any museum in Benin City, Edo State, particularly one that intends to deal with Benin artefacts without the consent of the Oba of Benin.

The Obazelu argues that the move by MOWAA undermines the authority of the Benin Royal Palace, which he insists is the sole custodian of Benin cultural heritage and artefacts. The case comes amid ongoing debates over the preservation, ownership, and repatriation of historic Benin treasures.

The court is expected to set a date for hearing, as stakeholders in culture, heritage, and traditional institutions closely monitor the unfolding legal battle.
