Nigeria TV Info — Venezuela Shuts Down Embassy in Norway Following Nobel Peace Prize Award to Opposition Leader Machado
Venezuela has announced the closure of its embassy in Norway, just days after opposition leader María Corina Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize, a move that has reignited diplomatic tensions between Caracas and Western nations.
In a statement released on Monday, the Venezuelan government did not directly mention Machado or her Nobel recognition. Instead, it described the decision as part of a wider “restructuring” of its diplomatic missions abroad. However, analysts and diplomats have largely interpreted the move as a political reaction to the Oslo-based Nobel Committee’s decision to honor Machado’s efforts to promote democracy in Venezuela.
Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the embassy’s closure but noted that no official explanation was provided by Caracas.
“Despite our differences on several issues, Norway wishes to keep the dialogue open with Venezuela,” a ministry spokeswoman stated, emphasizing that “the Nobel Prize is independent of the Norwegian government.”
Machado, 58, is a long-time pro-democracy advocate and one of the most prominent figures in Venezuela’s divided opposition. She has been a vocal critic of President Nicolás Maduro, whose 12-year rule has been denounced as authoritarian by many Western governments and human rights organizations.
Having spent much of the past year in hiding due to political persecution, Machado’s Nobel Prize recognition has been seen globally as a symbolic victory for Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement.
During Friday’s Nobel ceremony, Committee Chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes praised Machado as a “key, unifying figure in a brutal authoritarian state suffering humanitarian and economic collapse.”
The embassy closure marks the latest sign of Venezuela’s diplomatic isolation amid growing international scrutiny of its human rights record and political repression.
