Trump Administration Revokes Nearly 80,000 Non-Immigrant Visas in Wide-Ranging Crackdown
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked close to 80,000 non-immigrant visas since returning to office on January 20, marking one of the largest visa enforcement actions undertaken by the U.S. government in recent years.
According to a senior official at the U.S. Department of State, the cancellations affected several categories of temporary visitors, including tourists, international students, and foreign workers.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the majority of the revoked visas were tied to criminal offenses and political activity flagged during stricter screening processes.
Out of the total revocations this year:
16,000 visas were withdrawn due to driving-under-the-influence (DUI) offenses,
12,000 over varying degrees of assault,
8,000 for theft and related charges.
âThese three crimes alone account for almost 50 percent of the revocations,â the official revealed.
The move underscores the Trump administrationâs heightened immigration enforcement strategy, which includes expanded background checks, social media reviews, and closer assessment of applicantsâ political affiliations and activities.
Since returning to office, President Trump has repeatedly emphasized a tougher border and immigration posture, insisting that visa access must be reserved for individuals who ârespect U.S. laws and values.â
The latest development has drawn mixed reactions globally, with some praising the policy for prioritizing public safety, while others argue it may unfairly affect students, travelers, and workers with minor or unclear infractions.
