Nigerian Passport Ranked 89th Globally in 2026 Henley Passport Index
Abuja â The Nigerian passport has been ranked 89th out of 199 countries in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, according to the latest report released this January.
The annual index, which uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and expert analyses, measures passport strength by the number of destinations holders can access visa-free, with visa on arrival, a visitorâs permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA).
Nigeria shares the 89th position with Myanmar, both offering access to 44 countries without prior visas. The ranking follows a fluctuating year for the Nigerian passport, which had reached its highest position in five years at 88th last July before slipping to 94th by the end of the year.
In Africa, Nigeria remains the seventh least powerful passport, ahead of only Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Libya, and Eritrea. Seychelles continues to hold the top spot as Africaâs most powerful passport, followed by Mauritius and South Africa.
Globally, Singapore retains the title of the most powerful passport, granting access to 192 countries, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom with entry to just 24 nations.
The Henley Passport Index, compiled by Henley & Partners, is widely regarded as a key benchmark for assessing global mobility and reflects ongoing shifts in international travel access.
