Ebola Emergency Watch Begins in Lagos, FCT and Eight States
Health authorities in Nigeria have placed Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and eight other states on heightened surveillance following renewed concerns over Ebola virus disease outbreaks in parts of Central and East Africa. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says the measure is preventive and aims to strengthen early detection, rapid response, and containment systems nationwide.
According to public health updates, no confirmed Ebola case has been recorded in Nigeria, but the agency has activated emergency preparedness structures across all high-risk states, including border and airport screening systems. States under watch are being advised to intensify surveillance in hospitals, border communities, and entry points.
The Federal Government has also reassured Nigerians that response teams are on standby, isolation centres are ready, and health workers are being placed on alert to quickly manage any suspected case.
Officials stressed that public cooperation, hygiene practices, and timely reporting of symptoms remain critical in preventing any outbreak spread, recalling Nigeriaâs successful containment of the 2014 Ebola outbreak as a model for rapid response.
