Political Parties in Nigeria Have Lost Their Voices – Utomi

Lagos – Professor Pat Utomi, a renowned political economist, has expressed concern over the current state of political parties in Nigeria, stating that they have "lost their voices" and no longer serve as platforms for genuine representation of the people.

Utomi, speaking at a recent seminar on democracy and governance, lamented that many parties have become mere vehicles for individual ambitions rather than instruments for policy advocacy or social transformation. He emphasized that this trend undermines democratic principles and weakens citizen participation in the political process.

According to Utomi, the lack of internal democracy, ideological clarity, and engagement with grassroots communities has rendered political parties largely ineffective. “When parties fail to articulate clear policies and are dominated by powerful elites, they lose their essence. Nigerians deserve parties that speak for them, not just to capture power,” he said.

He urged political stakeholders, including party leaders and lawmakers, to reform internal structures, embrace transparency, and prioritize national interest over personal gains. Utomi also called on citizens to demand accountability and actively participate in party activities to restore their relevance.
