2027: Opposition Splits Over Plan to Shift National Assembly Polls

Tensions are rising within Nigeria’s opposition bloc as disagreements deepen over an alleged plan by the ruling party to alter the 2027 National Assembly election timetable. Sources within opposition circles revealed that while some leaders favor aligning the legislative polls with the presidential election for “strategic convenience,” others accuse the ruling party of scheming to weaken the opposition’s electoral coordination.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is reportedly reviewing proposals that could see the National Assembly elections moved closer to or held simultaneously with the presidential vote. Opposition figures from the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP argue that such a move could compromise transparency, reduce voter turnout, and tilt the advantage to incumbents with greater resources.

A PDP lawmaker, who spoke under anonymity, described the plan as “a disguised ploy to centralize political influence and manipulate voter sentiment.” However, other opposition members insist a synchronized election would save costs and ensure a smoother transition.

Political analysts warn that the internal rift could weaken the opposition’s ability to mount a unified front ahead of the 2027 general elections, giving the ruling party an edge in legislative dominance.
