Trump Says U.S. May Consider Military Action in Nigeria Over Christian Killings
United States President Donald Trump has suggested that the U.S. military could deploy troops to Nigeria or launch air strikes in response to what he described as the killing of Christians in the country.
Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday while returning to Washington from his Florida residence, Trump said the U.S. was closely monitoring the situation and may consider direct intervention if the violence continues.
âCould be. I mean, other things. I envisage a lot of things,â Trump said when asked whether he was referring to deploying troops or carrying out air strikes.
âTheyâre killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria ⊠Theyâre killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. Weâre not going to allow that to happen,â he added.
The remarks follow earlier comments made on Saturday, where Trump had warned that his administration would take action if Nigerian authorities failed to stop attacks on Christian communities.
The U.S. government recently returned Nigeria to its âCountries of Particular Concernâ (CPC) list â a group of nations it accuses of severe violations of religious freedom. Other countries currently on the list include China, Myanmar, Russia, Pakistan, and North Korea.
The development has drawn global attention, with analysts noting that any form of U.S. military intervention in Nigeria would carry significant diplomatic and security implications for West Africa.
The Nigerian government has not yet issued an official response to the U.S. presidentâs comments.
