Anambra Decides: Amupitan Faces Litmus Test as 2.8m Vote Today
Over 2.8 million registered voters in Anambra State head to the polls today to elect a new governor in a crucial election that marks the first under INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan. The poll is seen as a key test of INECâs credibility and commitment to electoral reforms.
Sixteen political parties, including two female candidates, are participating. Major contenders include incumbent Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo (APGA), Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu (APC), Dr. George Moghalu (LP), Jude Ezenwafor (PDP), John Nwosu (ADC), and Sir Paul Chukwuma (YPP).
INEC confirmed readiness with 5,718 polling units, 6,879 BVAS devices, and 24,000 ad hoc staff. Materials have been distributed to all local government areas under tight security. Police announced a restriction of vehicular movement from 12am to 6pm, deploying 55,000 officers to ensure safety and deter vote-buying or violence.
Election observers from CDD, Yiaga Africa, and CTA have deployed across the state, while four National Commissioners and ten Resident Electoral Commissioners will supervise proceedings. Despite fears of insecurity in Ihiala and other LGAs, INEC assured that voting will proceed under protection. Political parties have urged INEC and security agencies to ensure transparency and fairness.
