Protesters Storm COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil, Demand Urgent Action to Save Amazon Rainforest

BelĂ©m, Brazil – Tensions flared on Tuesday night at the COP30 climate conference in BelĂ©m as hundreds of protesters stormed the venue, demanding immediate measures to protect the Amazon rainforest and end environmental destruction.

The demonstrators, which included indigenous leaders and climate activist groups, carried placards with messages such as “Our forests are not for sale” while chanting and confronting security officials. Some protesters, dressed in traditional indigenous attire, were seen in videos circulating on social media kicking down doors and waving flags of the left-wing youth movement, Juntos.

According to security officials, two staff members sustained minor injuries, while one security guard was struck on the head by a drum thrown by a protester. Authorities also confirmed limited property damage to parts of the venue.

The United Nations (UN) said the protesters managed to breach the initial layer of security barriers before being stopped by UN and Brazilian security forces from penetrating deeper into the conference area.

Both Brazilian authorities and UN officials have opened investigations into the incident, describing it as a rare and serious breach at an international event known for its tight security protocols.

Observers say the protest underscores mounting frustration among activists and indigenous groups who accuse world leaders of failing to deliver on promises made at previous climate summits. The Amazon rainforest—often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth”—has faced accelerated deforestation and exploitation despite global calls for protection.

The COP30 conference, which brings together delegates from nearly 200 countries, is focused on advancing global efforts to combat climate change and meet carbon reduction targets set under the Paris Agreement.
