U.S. President Trump Gives Ukraine a Tight Deadline on Russia-Backed Peace Proposal
In a move stirring global controversy, U.S. President Donald Trump has given Ukraine less than a week to accept a 28-point peace plan â widely criticized as being favorable to Russia â to end the nearly four-year-long war.
The proposal reportedly demands major concessions from Kyiv, including ceding control of parts of the Donbas region, limiting its military capabilities, and renouncing its ambition to join NATO.
Trump has set Thanksgiving (next Thursday in the U.S.) as an âacceptableâ deadline for Ukraine to sign on. The U.S. president is also threatening to cut intelligence sharing and weapons support if Kyiv refuses.
In a solemn national address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country is facing âone of the most difficult momentsâ in its history. He warned that agreeing to Trumpâs plan could mean losing dignity, freedom, and justice.
Zelenskyy has rejected talks that would involve âswapping territoriesâ with Russia, saying Ukraine âwill not give Russia any awards for what it has done.â Nonetheless, his office confirmed it has received the draft plan and is ready to engage in diplomatic discussions.
European leaders have expressed concern, warning that any peace deal must fully respect Ukraineâs sovereignty and not amount to a capitulation.
