EU Announces €235m Humanitarian Aid for West and Central Africa
The European Commission has unveiled a €235 million humanitarian aid package to support millions of vulnerable people across West and Central Africa, as the region faces worsening crises driven by conflict, food insecurity, and climate-related shocks.
According to the Commission, the funding will target internally displaced persons, host communities, and populations in hard-to-reach areas, providing life-saving assistance such as food, healthcare, clean water, shelter, and education support.
A significant portion of the aid will be directed to crisis hotspots. The Central Sahel will receive €75 million, while Chad is allocated over €72 million to address displacement linked to the Sudan crisis. The Central African Republic will get €22 million, and Cameroon over €16.6 million. Mauritania is set to receive €4.8 million, while more than €6 million will go to coastal countries affected by insecurity.
Notably, Nigeria will receive €33 million from the package, focusing on urgent health, nutrition, and food assistance in the North-East and North-West regions, where millions face severe hunger and malnutrition.
EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, described the situation as a “storm of humanitarian crises,” stressing that aid remains essential for survival for millions facing displacement, poverty, and instability across the region.
The EU noted that the humanitarian challenges in West and Central Africa are interconnected, with conflicts, climate change, and economic pressures combining to worsen displacement and deepen food crises, particularly in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin.
