China Scraps Tariffs for All but One African Nation
China has officially removed import tariffs on goods from 53 African countries, granting nearly the entire continent duty-free access to its massive market. The only country excluded is Eswatini, due to its diplomatic relationship with Taiwan instead of Beijing.
The zero-tariff policy took effect on May 1, 2026, and expands an earlier agreement that previously covered 33 least-developed African nations. Major economies such as Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt are now fully included in the initiative.
Chinese authorities say the move is designed to deepen economic cooperation with Africa, increase trade volumes and support industrial growth across the continent. Products expected to benefit include cocoa from Ghana and CĂŽte dâIvoire, Kenyan coffee and avocados, as well as South African citrus fruits and wine.
The policy also comes at a time of rising global trade tensions and growing protectionist measures in Western economies. Analysts believe China is positioning itself as Africaâs preferred trade partner while expanding its political and economic influence across the continent. However, experts warn that Africa still faces a significant trade imbalance with China, exporting mainly raw materials while importing manufactured goods.
According to Chinaâs customs data, trade between China and Africa reached a record $348 billion in 2025, reinforcing Beijingâs status as Africaâs largest trading part.
