Obi, Kwankwaso Formally Join NDC
Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The two opposition figures were officially received on Sunday in Abuja by NDC leaders, including former Bayelsa State governor Seriake Dickson and the partyâs national chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe.
Their defection follows weeks of speculation over their political future amid internal crises within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Reports indicate that Obi recently resigned from the ADC, citing a toxic political environment and unresolved leadership disputes.
Speaking after the closed-door meeting, Kwankwaso urged Nigerians to support the NDC, while party leaders described both politicians as strategic additions capable of strengthening the opposition coalition ahead of 2027.
Political observers believe the move could reshape Nigeriaâs opposition landscape, with Obi commanding strong support among young voters and Kwankwaso maintaining significant influence in Northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya movement.
The development is already generating nationwide reactions as analysts predict new alliances, possible mergers, and intensified political calculations ahead of the next presidential election.
