Ex-Senate Chief Whip, others dump ADC for NDC in Edo

The political landscape in Edo State witnessed a fresh wave of defections on Wednesday as prominent members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including a former Senate Chief Whip, moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defectors said their decision followed deep internal crises within the ADC, alleging party hijack, leadership imposition, and unresolved disputes at both state and national levels. They also claimed the party had become unstable and no longer reflective of its founding principles.

Among those who defected was former Senate Chief Whip, Sir Rowland Owie, alongside Sunny Aguebor and other key stakeholders. They stated that the NDC offered a more stable platform without the legal and leadership conflicts currently affecting the ADC.

Owie reportedly criticised the Edo ADC leadership structure, alleging that decisions were being imposed and party processes compromised. He maintained that most “genuine members” of the party had already shifted allegiance to the NDC due to dissatisfaction.

Reacting, ADC officials downplayed the development, insisting the party remains focused on its internal restructuring and preparations for upcoming elections.

The defections add to ongoing realignments within Edo politics ahead of future electoral contests.
