Court Approves El-Rufai’s Medical Treatment While in Custody
A High Court has granted permission for former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to receive medical treatment while remaining in custody, following an application filed by his legal team citing urgent health concerns.
According to court proceedings, the defence counsel argued that El-Rufai’s health condition requires continuous specialist care that cannot be adequately provided within detention facilities. They requested that he be allowed access to his personal physicians and external medical services under strict security supervision.
The prosecution did not oppose the application outright but insisted that any medical movement must be tightly monitored to prevent security breaches or interference with ongoing investigations. The judge, after reviewing medical reports and legal arguments, ruled in favour of the application, stressing that the right to health is fundamental and must be upheld even for individuals in custody.
The court order stipulates that El-Rufai will remain in custody but will be escorted by security operatives whenever he is transferred for medical treatment. The ruling is seen as a balancing act between ensuring humane treatment and maintaining judicial control over the defendant.
The case has continued to attract national attention, with supporters describing the ruling as fair, while critics argue it may set a precedent for preferential treatment of high-profile detainees. Proceedings are expected to continue in the coming weeks as further hearings are scheduled.
